Automakers Urge U.S. to Extend North American Trade Agreement
General Motors (GM), Tesla (TSLA), and Toyota Motor Corp. (TM) are pressing the U.S. government to maintain the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), citing its critical role in sustaining American auto production and economic stability. The automakers submitted a joint plea to the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office ahead of the 2026 review, emphasizing the pact’s role in global competitiveness and cost efficiency.
The USMCA, which replaced NAFTA in 2018, underpins the tightly integrated North American auto market. Disruptions to the agreement could jeopardize billions in annual savings and regional manufacturing synergies. With automakers operating facilities across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, the stakes for the sector are particularly high as the review looms.
